Why do girls beat around the bush?

Today I was on my iTouch on the MySpace mobile, and I went to this girl's MySpace that I've been talking to. I went to her comments, and saw her talking to her friend about a guy that she met at homecoming and danced with, and how he thinks he has a chance with her but has no chance at all, which would be me. She has said but not to me that she doesnt want a bf her senior year but that shouldnt matter. I've been talking to her for over 3 weeks, and before I read that comment I felt like she SORTA liked me too: I told her she was cute she said I was cute, she would call my name when she saw me at school, she would pull me aside if I didnt see her, and give me pretty long hugs which to me shows that she has at least has/had some feeling towards me. But to get to my question, why would she or why are girls (not trying to stereotype) not usually straightforward with a guy when it comes to stuff like this?
