How the alloy BR is useful in proton therapy ??

Proton therapy is a type of radiation treatment which uses protons. It is generally used for cancer treatments. I have heard that br alloy is used in that treatment. How is it used ? what are the other metals or alloys that can substitute br in that treatment.Also I want to know whats the importance and usage of Br alloy.
