Why did my mom say this? (about periods)?

Yesterday I tried one of my moms tampons for the first time, and she saw the rapper from it, and was like "Oh god please tell me your not using tampons and were just looking out of curiousity". I'm not using them but I want to. Anyway why did my mom say that?! Are tampons innapropriate or something?
