Jesus the son of God?

Is Jesus really the son of God or just a prophet? If Jesus is the son if God than why wasn't Muhammad? Obviously God sent them both as the chosen messengers. But why was the bible written several hundred years after Jesus but yet the Qur'an was written the same days that Muhammad was alive? Do you think that God sent Muhammad second because God wanted to rephrase his words or was it because God felt that Jesus was killed too soon before his message was finished?
